In my day job, I do a lot of unforeseen graphic-designing. When I have to,
Inkscape comes to the rescue!
Its simple, works fast, and I can modify PDFs, which ( surprisingly ) much of my work is comprised of.

Developers update Inkscape with betas pretty regularly too, even on the Mac! There’s some good tutorials out there too.

Anyways, big shout out goes out to the hard-working Inkscape community – your program saves my ass quite a bit.

I honestly would pay a monthly rate for a browser game. Say, 10 bucks a month for a good puzzle-type game, unity-based, in HD. Would you guys do so?

Apparently this company doesn’t agree.

This particular part stands out for me:

“Hi-Rez Studios is committed to delivering the best value in PC gaming,” said executive producer Todd Harris in a statement. Global Agenda Executive Producer. “One purchase of Global Agenda lets you experience all [existing] content forever with no subscription.”

The move brings to mind online game developer Turbine’s decision to go free-to-play with its two major licensed MMOs, Dungeons & Dragons Online and The Lord of the Rings Online, both of which began as traditional subscription-based titles, but is actually much closer to the business model employed by ArenaNet in its own online games Guild Wars and its upcoming sequel.

I guess this is good value – but is it good business? I don’t mind paying a monthly subscription rate, provided I get decent quality games. Maybe they’ll just constantly release expansion packs, and if that’s the case, its really six of one, half a dozen of the other. Either your renewing subscriptions, or your selling expansions.

I wonder what triggered the move from subscriptions to expansions.

I’ve spent my fair share of time wrestling around with so-called industry standard software, hunting through vast arrays of buttons and windows. Sometimes I’d swear I spent more time looking through windows and buttons, than actually working!

As far as image editing goes, Acorn is a breath of fresh air. Its clean, uncluttered interface frees me to focus on actual work! It gets all the ‘little stuff’ right, too. For instance, when you hit Option while dragging out a window, it increases the res of the image accordingly, and AA-stretches whatever you already have there!

Anyways, its a fraction of the cost of Photoshop. No, it doesn’t have epic, massive menus with thousands of 3rd party filters. But that’s ok – I can actually wrap my mind around Acorn in about 5 minutes, and be productive. Oh, it has a pretty neat API too.

Plus, the creator is a pretty smart, capable guy. He actually responds to bug reports, and fixes them. And as you know, I owe the world to bug-fixers.

The original reason I got into Blender was its stability. I’d been working with Maya, but bugs were constantly plaguing me. When I switched over to Blender, I finally could sleep at night, not worrying about the kind of crashing that would happen tomorrow, or the day after.

And while Blender had its limitations, that was fine. Limitations are understood, and can be planned for. Glitches, bugs, well not as much. Unless you read the bug tracker every hour.

Currently, 2.5 is still Alpha. And yes, in Alpha, its normal for some instability. But developers have really been stomping out a lot of bugs. Sadly, even though this is really important, the community doesn’t seem to recognize this.

It seems users either praise bleeding-edge features, or simply ask for more. No one seems to glorify the bug-fixes. So here’s to you, bugfixers. I’d fix them too, if I knew how!
